In the sometimes-rough weather conditions that Saskatchewan has to offer, a suitable vehicle is a must-have. However, buying even a used car can often cost thousands of dollars. With how much debt the average Canadian holds, most of us are unable to drop that sort of cash on a car. Thankfully, applying for a car loan in Saskatchewan is a great way for all residents to get behind the wheel of the car they need.

Need more information about loans in Saskatchewan? Take a look at this.

What is a Car Loan?

Car loans in Saskatchewan are somewhat similar to a standard installment loan, only that it is used for the sole purpose of getting a car. These loans help the car buyer to pay off the car in monthly payments over time, as opposed to a large one-time payment. Saving up so much money to purchase a car in cash is simply unattainable for most people. These loans can be secured at banks, from private lenders, and potentially even from the dealership itself. The terms, conditions, and costs will vary depending on what type of lender you choose to work with.

What Type of Car Loan Can I Get?

Generally speaking, a car loan is a car loan. It’s a type of loan used to purchase a vehicle and is secured by that same vehicle. But, where you can find some variety in the type of loan you’re offered is with the lender you choose to work with. If you have bad credit, you should choose a lender that specializes in bad credit borrowers. If you’re looking for flexibility in your repayment plan, find a lender that offers such services. The lender you choose should depend on your finances, your needs, and what type of car you’re looking to buy.

How to Improve Your Chances of Getting Approved

Getting a car loan in Saskatchewan is relatively attainable for most people, but there are things to do to give yourself a better chance of getting approved, such as:

  • Make sure your credit score and credit report are in good standing before applying
  • Shopping around at different lenders to see who offers the better deal or interest rate
  • If you have bad credit, it’s important to work with a lender who specializes in providing bad credit car loans.
  • Ensure any other debt that you have is under control or even better, completely paid off

What Type of Vehicle Can You Get With a Car Loan?

With so many different types of vehicles out there, how can you know which make and model are available to you? Thankfully, most types of car loans allow the driver to get whatever kind of car they desire, as long as it fits in the price range of their budget and loan. As a result, there is an almost endless variety of vehicles you can get with a car loan in Saskatchewan, including:

  • SUVs
  • Vans
  • Hatchbacks
  • Sedans
  • Coupes
  • Recreational Vehicles (campers, motorcycles, ATVs)
  • Trucks

Of course, the kind of vehicle you go with will also depend on your budget, the options available at the dealerships you visit in Saskatchewan, as well as your needs. While some consumers may be looking for a reliable family car, others may be more interested in something a little more heavy duty. Just remember, you will eventually have to pay off whichever vehicle you go with, so make sure it is practical (and affordable) for your lifestyle.

The Need For a Reliable Vehicle in Saskatchewan

As mentioned, the driving conditions in all of Canada can be rough, but the need for a reliable car in Saskatchewan is more pressing than in many provinces. Winters are notoriously cold, windy, and snowy in the province. All of these elements can wreak havoc on your vehicle. If your car isn’t up to the task, it can feel like you are putting your life on the line every single time you get in the car to drive, especially during a winter storm or after an overnight dose of freezing rain.

Wondering where you can find a vehicle repair loan? Try this.

At the minimum, your car should be equipped with winter tires and should have a new enough battery and internal systems to be able to start up in weather that regularly gets colder than -30 degrees Celsius. If you’re purchasing a used vehicle and it’s not quite up to handling a Saskatchewan winter, make sure you can afford to make any additional purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have bad credit. Can I still get a car loan in Saskatchewan?

It’s entirely possible to get a car loan in Saskatchewan even with a low credit score. However, be prepared for certain conditions. For one, you will likely pay a higher interest rate than normal. For non-prime car loans, the rates are generally from 8.99% to 29.99%. The exact rate will depend on some other factors besides your raw credit score. For example, newer cars actually have lower interest rates than older cars because of their retained value. Also, if your budget allows it, making your car loan shorter in length can net you a lower rate overall. A larger down payment is another way of potentially lowering the interest rate on your car loan. Besides credit score, you should also be concerned with meeting the bare minimum requirements before being considered for a car loan. Generally, you should have at least 3 months or more of continued employment, with $1600 to $2000 in monthly income. A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and bank account are also required.

Can I refinance my car to save money?

Car loan refinancing is a way for you to change the rate, terms, and conditions of your car loan to your benefit. It can be done with your current loan provider or a new provider who’s taking over the loan. A new loan is calculated that is based on any remaining balance from the previous loan. You can use this refinancing as a way to lower your monthly payments, save overall interest paid, or even to get a cash loan (called “cash-out refinancing”). If you’re lowering your monthly payments, it most likely means you’ll be extending your term. You might be paying more in interest overall, but smaller monthly payments might be easier to manage. Saving on overall interest paid is usually done by refinancing to a shorter-term loan. And finally, cash-out refinancing is an option with newer cars. The cash loan amount will depend on the equity of the vehicle.

Can I pay off my car loan early?

Generally speaking, most car loans will charge you a prepayment penalty if you’d like to make early payments. Even so, depending on how much interest you’ll save, it might be worth it despite the penalty. Your car loan contract might also give you what’s referred to as “prepayment privilege”. Whenever your payments are scheduled, this privilege lets you pay up to a certain amount extra on top of your regular payment without any penalties. Doing this can save you lots of interest charges. A better alternative is to seek out what’s called an “open-end” car loan contract. Although they are less common, these will allow you to repay the loan as early as you’d like, saving you a ton of interest with no penalties.
