Thousands of consumers all across Canada use Loans Canada to help them compare and review different lenders and financial service providers. As such, we strive to provide accurate and unbiased information on all the reviews featured on Loans Canada.

Every lender in the Loans Canada directory goes through the same review process where we look at five key areas that affect a borrower, including cost and transparency, terms and funding, access and eligibility, customer experience and trust and compliance.

Together they give you a clear, dated picture of who you would be borrowing from, verified against public sources.

What Each Means

Cost And Transparency

  • APR Range Published - We check whether the lender shows its interest rates on its own website, before you apply. A full range, from the lowest rate to the highest, gives you the clearest idea of what you could pay. For payday loans, we look for the cost per $100 borrowed, since that is how payday loan costs are shown.
  • Fees Easy To Find - We check whether you can find out what borrowing costs on the lender's own website, without submitting an application. That might be an interest rate, an APR, a cost per $100 borrowed, or a worked example showing total repayment. We start on the home page and count how many clicks it takes to get there.

Terms And Funding

  • Amount And Term Range - We check whether the lender publishes how much you can borrow and how long you have to pay it back. Knowing both up front helps you see whether a loan fits what you need.
  • Funding Speed - We record how quickly the lender says you can get your money once you're approved, as stated on its own website.

Access And Eligibility

  • Soft-Check Pre-Qualification - We check whether you can see if you qualify with a soft credit check. A soft check doesn't affect your credit score, so you can explore your options with no impact. Lenders that don't check your credit at all also meet this check, since applying won't affect your score.
  • Requirements Published - We check whether the lender lists what you need to qualify, such as a minimum age, income or credit score, so you know where you stand before you apply.
  • How You Can Apply - This check tells you whether you can apply online, in person at a branch, or both. We determine it by checking the lender's website and whether the company has physical branches you can walk into.

Trust And Compliance

  • Licensed - A yes means the lender is licensed in every province where it operates and where a licence is required. We search each province's public registry under the lender's name. The check clears only when the lender appears on the registry for every province it claims to serve and requires a licence. Do note that a licence is not required everywhere. Some lenders can operate legally in a province without one, because provincial law does not require a licence for that type of lending. In Ontario, for example, private lenders other than payday and mortgage lenders do not need a licence, but they must still follow the Consumer Protection Act.
  • Years In Business - Using public sources, we verify the year the company started operating, so you can see how long the lender has been serving Canadians.
  • BBB Letter Rating - We look the company up on the Better Business Bureau's own website and record the letter rating the BBB has assigned it. The rating reflects how the business actually handles complaints filed through the BBB. Accreditation is a separate, paid membership, which is worth knowing when you read a profile. A lender can hold an A+ without being accredited at all.
  • CLA Certified - We check the Canadian Lenders Association certified lender directory to see whether the lender is listed. In the CLA's own words, certified organizations "meet rigorous standards for regulatory compliance and industry best practices." The CLA is an industry association, and certification comes with paid membership, so it tells you a lender has chosen to join and to meet the association's standards.
  • Privacy Policy - We check whether there is a published privacy policy that you can easily access and read to see how your information is used and stored. We confirm the policy exists and that it is reachable from the lender's own website without an account.
  • Social Media - We check which social media accounts the lender has, whether that is Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, YouTube or TikTok. We take the channels listed on the lender's own website and confirm each one exists and belongs to the company.
  • Trusted By Loans Canada - We give this designation to our partners and to other lenders we truly trust. Working closely with a lender shows us more about how it does business than anything we can find online. Through these relationships, we see first-hand how the lender treats borrowers, how quickly it responds, and how it handles problems when they come up.
  • Loans Canada (Trust Seal) - This check is for lenders who received the Loans Canada Trust Seal. A seal is awarded to lenders and other financial service providers that have earned our trust and have demonstrated certain qualities. The financial service providers with the Loans Canada Trust Seal show:
    • Strong Security. They have taken serious measures to protect consumer data. For example, we look at how your information is protected, including 128-bit or 256-bit encryption.
    • Good Customer Service. They provide easy ways for customers to reach their support teams. For example, we look at the channels that reach a person: phone, email, live chat or a help centre.
    • Transparent Fees. Their fees are easily accessible and understandable. For example, we look at whether costs are explained, and how easily you find them before applying.
    • Responsible Lending Practices. They are fully compliant with lending laws. For example, we look at licensing, years in business and BBB accreditation.
    • An Established Reputation in the alternative lending industry.
Loans Canada Trust Seal

Customer Experience

  • Trustpilot Reviews - We look at the lender's Trustpilot rating to see how its customers describe their experience, and the lender receives a score based on that rating.
  • Support Channels - We check the ways you can reach a person for customer support, whether that is by phone, email, live chat, in a branch, or through an in-app message.

Why Are Our Ratings Sometimes Higher Than Those On Other Platforms?

Online reviews are helpful, but they don't always reflect what borrowing is like for a typical customer. People who were declined for a loan, or who had trouble repaying one, are often more likely to leave a review than borrowers whose loan went smoothly.

That's why reviews are one part of the rating, not the whole picture. We also look at how the lender does business: whether it's licensed where required, whether it meets industry standards, and whether it shows its costs before you apply. Together, these give you a more accurate idea of what to expect.

How Often Do We Review Our Lenders?

We do our utmost to keep every lender review up to date. Each rating shows the date the lender was last reviewed, so you always know how current the information is.

Everything Is Fact Checked

Every lender review on Loans Canada is fact checked by a member of our team before it’s published.

The fact checker looks at:

  • Rates, terms, and fees
  • Licences
  • Provinces served

Fact checking helps to catches mistakes like an outdated rate, a lender who has changed their terms or a licence that has expired. Because you may be deciding whether to borrow based on what you read here, we want every number to be right. When you see the Fact Checked badge at the top of a lender review, the page has been through this check. The Last Checked date next to it shows when. When a lender changes their rates or terms, we update the page and check it again.

If You Think We Got Something Wrong

If you are a borrower and something in a lender review does not match what the lender told you, tell us, and tell the lender. A gap between the two is worth knowing about either way.

If you are a lender and a fact in your review is wrong, write to us with the correct information and where we can confirm it. We will check the source, correct the review, update the rating if needed, and re-date it.

Common Questions

Does a lower rating mean a lender is risky?

Not necessarily. A lower rating means the lender scored lower in one or more of our five categories. That might be something minor, like costs that are harder to find, or something more serious, like a missing licence or a low BBB rating. Check the category scores in each review to see where a lender lost points.

Can a lender pay for a higher rating?

No. Every lender is reviewed against the same five categories and factors. A rating only changes when the underlying facts change, or when we find an error and correct it.

Who reviews the lenders?

Our editorial team, using public sources, the lender's own website and our partnership records.
