Sometimes described as the “Apple of vacuum cleaners,” Dyson has created a cult status for itself in the vacuum market. With a slick design, excellent marketing, and innovation, Dyson vacuums also happen to be very expensive. Although highly coveted, many homeowners find Dyson’s to be a splurge that often goes over their budget. So why not get a refurbished Dyson?

We’ll dive into the refurbished market for Dyson vacuums, and give you all you need to know on making your cleaning dreams come true.

What Is A Dyson?

Although the company Dyson makes many appliances, they are most famous for their vacuum cleaners. With many different models across a range of prices, Dyson vacuums are sleek and compact. A big selling point of a Dyson, and the main reason why they became so famous, is the absence of a dust bag. Instead, these vacuums use dual cyclone technology which spins the air inside to create a powerful suction.

Why Are Dyson’s So Expensive?

Dyson vacuum cleaners come with a hefty price tag. Other brands offer stick vacuums ranging from $150 to $300 CAD. Take, for instance, the Miele Triflex HX1, which is priced at $599 CAD, whereas the Dyson V12 is available for $899 CAD. The price difference is quite substantial. Dyson justifies its high cost due to the inclusion of exclusive technologies and features that are not found in other vacuums. Additionally, customers pay for the sleek and attractive design that is hard to match in the market.

Can You Buy A Refurbished Dyson?

You can quite easily find a refurbished Dyson online. Whereas sites like eBay and Facebook marketplace are the go-to for second hand Dysons. Other sites such as BestBuy, Walmart, and the Dyson website all sell refurbished Dysons at discounted prices.

How Much Cheaper Is A Refurbished Dyson?

Refurbished Dysons are typically 100-200 dollars cheaper than a new one. In some cases, they will have some cosmetic damage and can even be 50% cheaper.

What’s The Difference Between Refurbished and Second Hand?

Every refurbished Dyson you buy has already been sold directly by Dyson, or had some cosmetic damage done to it. Although buying a second-hand Dyson is usually cheaper, there are several advantages that make refurbished Dysons a more reliable alternative. Every refurbished Dyson sold has been tested by Dyson-certified technicians, and fixed with replacement Dyson parts. They are even cleaned before being made available for sale.

Where Can You Get A Refurbished Dyson?

Here’s a list of places you can find a refurbished Dyson:

Dyson Outlet

While they don’t always have the most options, this is certainly the most trustworthy and reliable place to buy one. They also make it clear that all refurbished products have been rigorously tested and fixed.

Best Buy

They offer products that have been inspected by a third party, and tested for functionality. Unlike other sellers, they have three levels of condition, “fair”, “good” and “excellent”. This means you can buy a refurbished Dyson for a 50% discount!

Ebay

While most products might not undergo the rigorous inspection that refurbished items do, go for sellers with high ratings and other official sellers. The advantage of eBay is that it often offers a broader range of products compared to their official refurbished website. Additionally, you can use filters to only display ‘certified refurbished’ items if you’re skeptical about ‘seller refurbished’ ones on the website.

Walmart

Walmart has a bunch of options for refurbished Dysons. Their products are sold and shipped by the official Dyson Outlet which makes it a trustworthy option.

McHardy Vacuum

With several stores in Ontario and Manitoba, McHardy Vacuum is a trustworthy store to buy your refurbished vacuum either in-person or online. All refurbished products are sold through Dyson

Home Essentials Outlet

This Ontario store operates as a home essentials outlet that sells everything from vacuum cleaners to power tools.  Just like McHardy, they also sell through Dyson

Does A Refurbished Dyson Come With A Warranty?

The good news is, refurbished Dysons bought directly from Dyson still come with a 1-2 year warranty! This is very similar to the warranty offered with new products. To compare, brand new cordless vacuums get a 2-year warranty whereas corded vacuums get 5 years. Aside from Dyson, other sites such as Walmart or BestBuy, typically have a 1-year warranty. However, In some cases it will be less; Best Buy, for instance, provides a warranty between 3-12 months for Dysons in “fair condition.”

How To Pay For A Dyson Product?

If you are looking at different ways of financing your Dyson, here are some alternatives to paying upfront:

In-Store Financing

  • Dyson Financing: With Affirm (offered at checkout), you can spread the cost between 6 monthly installments. There is no interest and no set-up fee involved.
  • Best Buy Financing: They offer a buy now pay later system with Fairstone. You can apply and be accepted within minutes. Their plan comes in either a 3, 6, 12 or 18 month financing with Fairstone. The plan you can choose depends on your purchase amount. For example, purchases over 999.99 CAD can be financed over the 19-month plan with no interest, although a 100 CAD admin. Fee applies.
  • Walmart Financing: They have a 6-month installment plan with a 0-dollar set-up fee (Although Quebec is excluded). For every purchase, there is a 4% initial set-up fee involved. For example, a 200 CAD purchase has a 8 CAD set up fee whereas a 600 CAD purchase costs 24.

Personal Loan

With a decent credit score, it is easy to take out a personal loan to buy the Dyson of your dreams. Obtaining a loan with bad credit can be more difficult, but it’s not impossible. Specific loans tailored for individuals with poor credit are usually available through online lenders and a limited number of credit unions.

Bottom Line

While getting a secondhand Dyson is tempting, there are some extra benefits to a refurbished one, such as the warranty and testing procedure, that make it a good deal. While there are plenty of other alternatives on the market, there’s a reason Dyson has such a cult following. If you really want one, buying a refurbished one may save you some money, while also giving you that special ‘Dyson experience.
