What Is Glassdoor?

Founded by Robert Hohman, Rich Barton, and Tim Besse back in 2007 and launched a year later in 2008, Glassdoor is a job-posting website based in Mill Valley, California. Their services can now be accessed in Canada, the United States, Mexico, India, Australia, New Zealand, as well as several countries in Europe and South America.

These days, Glassdoor receives over 50 million visitors a month and has a network of more than 1.3 million employers worldwide. So, not only can prospective workers and students use their network to apply for different local or remote positions, employers can also access a wide range of resources specifically for recruitment and hiring purposes.

Plus, you can see what features their portal has. For instance, Glassdoor offers:

How To Use Glassdoor To Find The Perfect Job

One of the best things about Glassdoor is that its web portal and job search engine are pretty simple to use. For example, here’s what you have to do to apply for a job:

  • Create Your Account – As mentioned, you can only access 100% of Glassdoor’s features when you make an account, of which there are several types:
  • Job Seeker Account – Sign up with your email, Facebook, Google, or Apple account to access 12 free months of unlimited Glassdoor features. You must make at least one contribution yearly to keep the account active.
  • Student Account – You may not have any actual job experience because you’re still a student. In that case, you can create a student account and get access to the same 12 months of features as a Job Seeker Account.
  • Employer Account – People who work in human resources, marketing or management can access this free account and use it to view or respond to interviews, see company insights and improve their business as a whole.
  • Search & Apply – You can use the Glassdoor search engine without an account but you’ll only be able to apply for jobs once you create a profile. You can then upload your CV and connect your LinkedIn account. When you apply, potential employers will look at these elements to decide if you’re right for the position.

How To Increase Your Chances Of Being Hired

Despite the benefits that a Glassdoor membership comes with, remember that your odds of getting hired for various jobs are only as good as the amount of effort you’re willing to put forth. The first step is to make the most of your Glassdoor account by:

Updating Your Resume And Cover Letter(s)

As your work life progresses, it’s best to regularly update your CV, as well as your cover letter, which is optional but useful. In fact, you may need to write a slightly different cover letter for each job you apply for and many employers won’t hire applicants that don’t have one.

Filter Your Search Results

The economy is always changing and there are thousands of local and remote positions in circulation on Glassdoor at any given time. Don’t worry, you can filter your searches according to your preferences (salary, location, etc.) and the work you’re looking for (part-time, full-time, etc.).

Check out why your potential employer might want to check your credit.

Apply To More Than One Place

Before you apply for any job, keep in mind that there could be tons of other candidates trying to get the same position. Don’t rely on a single application to score you the career of your dreams. Check out several different opportunities, employers and companies to find the job you really want.

Set Up Job Alerts

Another way to increase your odds of getting hired is to activate the email notification feature that comes with your Glassdoor account. You should then receive alerts whenever new jobs in your desired field become available and you can apply before the position gets taken by someone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an account to use Glassdoor?

It depends on how you wish to use their website. If you just want to search for opportunities in Canada or any of Glassdoor’s other service countries, you don’t have to create an account. However, you need an account to apply for jobs, hire potential employees, look at reviews/interviews and obtain more advanced details about employers or companies.

Are Glassdoor employer reviews real?

Another good thing about Glassdoor is that they consistently monitor their members’ searching and posting behaviour for signs of fraudulent activity, such as clients who post fake reviews of employers or companies using multiple accounts. Additionally, clients must make at least one review of a company per year for their account to remain active. All Glassdoor users, including employers, companies, and students are monitored using the same algorithms to ensure transparency. All that said, it is possible to come across reviews that are less-than-honest when employees are asked to do so for their job.

If I review an employer on Glassdoor, will it be anonymous?

Leaving a review about an employer or company can be scary, especially if it’s negative. Thankfully, Glassdoor allows clients to post anonymously. They also provide basic legal protection against employers that try to sue or identify users without justifiable cause.

How can I unlock Glassdoor reviews?

Once again, to see employee reviews, salary information and other more advanced details, you’ll need to create a Glassdoor account first. Soon after, you’ll have to rate a former or current employer. This is part of their “Give to Get” Policy and it may involve writing a review of the company, as well as listing details about your salary and benefits.

Final Thoughts

It’s no secret that job searching can be inconvenient and time-consuming, particularly if you don’t have the right resources on hand. Luckily, popular websites like Glassdoor make it easier to find employment opportunities that truly suit your tastes. If you’re looking for a convenient way to search for a new job, compare reviews of employers, and even leave your opinion, Glassdoor is a great option to consider.
