Find A LenderCaptain Cash: Overview
Captain Cash is an online lender that has been serving Canadians since 2015. It offers installment loans of $500 to $1,000, with no credit check, repaid over 90 to 150 days rather than in one lump sum on your next payday.
The application is entirely online and takes about five minutes, with no documents to upload. If you are approved before 2:30pm Eastern on a business day, the money can reach your bank account the same day. Captain Cash reviews your income and banking activity rather than your credit score, and applying leaves no hard inquiry on your credit file.
It operates from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and describes itself in its own footer as a division of Opal Financial.
Are You The Right Borrower For Captain Cash?
An installment loan from Captain Cash could be a good fit for you if:
- You need a few hundred dollars and a bit of time to repay it. Loans run $500 to $1,000 over 90 to 150 days, rather than coming due in full on your next payday.
- You want payments that match your pay schedule. You choose weekly, bi-weekly or monthly installments.
- Bad credit has been limiting your options. There is no credit check, so approval rests on your income and your banking activity instead of your credit history.
- You need the money today. Approval before 2:30pm Eastern on a business day can mean same day funding.

What A Captain Cash Loan Costs
This is the part of the page to read carefully, because Captain Cash publishes two sets of numbers that do not agree with each other.
The site states an APR of 23% on the homepage, in the loan calculator, in the footer of every page and in its terms and conditions. It also publishes the dollar amounts you would actually repay, and those tell a different story.
| Their published example | You borrow | You repay | Cost of borrowing | Over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Representative example | $500 | About $750 | About $250 | 90 to 150 days |
| Live calculator | $700 | $1,050 | $350 | 120 days, 9 bi-weekly payments of $116.67 |
In both examples the cost of borrowing is half of what you borrowed. A $500 loan at a genuine 23% APR, held for 150 days, would cost you roughly $47 in interest, not $250.
Work it from the dollar amounts instead and the picture changes. Paying $250 on $500, or $350 on $700, over 90 to 150 days puts the simple annualized cost somewhere between 122% and 203%, depending on the term you are given. Because you repay in instalments rather than holding the full balance to the end, the rate on the money you actually still owe is higher again.
Other Fees
A returned payment costs you $45 in Captain Cash’s own NSF fee. That is separate from anything your bank charges, and bank NSF fees have been capped at $10 per failed payment since 12 March 2026. Deferring a payment costs $25 and needs 48 hours notice. There is no fee to apply, and no penalty for paying the loan off early.
How To Apply
The application is one long form, shown as step 1 of 4. Signing the contract, verifying your banking and confirmation follow after it. Captain Cash says the form takes about five minutes, and there is nothing to upload.
Here is what each part of it asks for.
Two things on that form are worth knowing before you start.
A first loan is capped at $600. The amount buttons go up to $1,000, but everything above $600 is greyed out, with a note saying larger amounts are for renewing clients only. .
You type your bank details straight into the form. Your bank, your five digit transit number and your account number are all fields on this page.
Alternatives Worth Checking First
Given the cost, it is worth ruling these out before you apply.
Ask Your Employer For A Payroll Advance
This is the one people forget, and it is usually free. Plenty of employers will advance you part of a paycheque you have already earned, with no fee attached. It is your own money, just paid to you a couple of weeks early. Speak to whoever handles payroll where you work and ask what their policy is.
Ask The Biller For More Time
If you are borrowing to cover a bill, start with the company sending it. Utilities, landlords and phone providers very often have hardship arrangements or payment plans that they do not advertise anywhere. A phone call costs you nothing, and people are frequently surprised by how willing a biller is to move a due date rather than lose the payment altogether.

Captain Cash Pros
- No credit check, and no hard inquiry. Applying does not affect your credit score.
- Instalments rather than a lump sum. Repaying over 90 to 150 days is easier to absorb than clearing everything on one payday.
- You choose the payment frequency, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, to match how you are paid.
- Same day funding if you are approved before 2:30pm Eastern on a business day.
- No prepayment penalty, and interest is charged only for the days you hold the money.
- A repayment schedule you can see before you apply, through the calculator on the site.
- Long established, operating since 2015 with a large body of Trustpilot reviews.
Captain Cash Cons
- No licence numbers published, and we could not confirm the licensing it claims.
- No Better Business Bureau profile, so there is no independent complaint record.
- Not found in the Canadian Lenders Association listings, despite the site claiming membership.
- A $45 NSF fee on a returned payment, charged by the lender on top of anything your bank charges.
- Nothing reported to the credit bureaus, so repaying on time will not help you rebuild credit.
- No social media presence of any kind.
