You can cancel your membership and return most merchandise for the full purchase price at Costco with very few exceptions. If you are unhappy with your Costco membership, you can cancel it, and Costco will refund your membership fee.

Although there are some exceptions on what merchandise can be returned and refunded, generally you can return any merchandise purchased in a Costco warehouse or from Costco’s website for the full purchase price.

Exceptions To Costco’s Return Policy

While Costco’s return policy is fairly flexible, it does have some exceptions.

  • Electronics: You can only return electronics such as televisions, dishwashers, and smartwatches within 90 days of receiving them.
  • Diamonds over 1.00 ct: If you are returning a diamond over 1.00 ct, you also have to submit any original paperwork. Costco’s gemologist will then inspect the diamond to make sure it is authentic.
  • Cigarettes and alcohol: It depends on the laws of the jurisdiction, but where forbidden, Costco does not accept returns on cigarettes and alcohol.
  • Products with an expiry date: Any products that have a limited life expectancy, such as batteries, are typically sold with a limited warranty.
  • Custom installation: Any custom products made to the buyer’s specifications cannot be returned or refunded because they cannot be resold.

How To Return An Item To Costco 

You can return items regardless if they were bought in a Costco warehouse or from Costco’s website.

To return a warehouse-bought item, you have to go to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse.

To return an item purchased online, you have to log into your Costco online account, select “Orders & Returns”, then select “Return Items” next to the items you want to return. You will receive a return label, or, if available, you can schedule a pickup.

Does Costco cover the shipping fees if I return an item online?

Yes. The cost of items returned online is credited to the credit card you used to purchase those items. All shipping and handling fees are refunded, and you aren’t charged for return shipping.

What if I made a mistake on my online order and want to cancel it?

Depending on how long it’s been since you made the order and when you want to cancel it, it may be possible to cancel the item. There will be a “Cancel Order” button next to your online order if you can still cancel it. You can’t change an order’s “ship to” address after the order has been made. You also cannot change or cancel an online order through Costco’s website if it has already been shipped, but you can contact Costco at 1-888-426-7826 or www.costco.ca/customer service.

I lost my receipt. Can I still return my product at Costco?

Generally, yes. You do need to return the product with all the pieces and parts it came with. It helps to speed up the return process if you have your receipt, but it’s not needed because Costco uses your membership account to track your purchases. You will need your membership number or membership card to make a return.

Does Costco’s return policy have a time limit?

Most items can be returned to Costco for almost any reason with no time limit on when you can return them. There are a few exceptions, such as electronics, which must be returned within 90 days.
