Are There Any Changes To EI?

Many of the temporary covid-19 adjustments to the EI program have been reverted back to their original state on September 25th, 202.

  • Number Of Hours To Qualify – To qualify for EI, applicants must meet the minimum hours worked. However, due to COVID-19, the government provided one-time top-ups to help Canadians qualify. But now, you’ll need 420 hours until September 24, 2022. After that, it’ll revert to the original 420 – 700 hours.
  • Benefits – The weekly floor benefits will be reduced from $500 to $300.
  • EI Calculations – The amount you receive under EI and the duration you receive these benefits will be calculated using the original regional unemployment rates over the temporary uniform unemployment rate of 13.1.
  • Waiting Period Reinstated – The one-week waiting period that was waived due to COVID-19 will now be in effect.
  • EI Sickness – Those who cannot work due to sickness must now provide a medical certificate.

What Will Happen To Those Who Are Still Unemployed Due To COVID-19?

Those who are still claiming the COVID-19 benefits should start looking into other programs that may support them. Each province has their own set of benefits and employment aid programs. You can use the Government of Canada Benefits Finder tool, to help you search for different benefits and services. You simply need to answer a  few questions regarding your situation and they will filter a list of options for you.
