Joon Sohn

About Joon

I am an Arts student at the University of British Columbia. As a high school student, I always knew that I wanted to pursue higher education, but I did not like the idea of drowning in student debt. Thus, I applied for many scholarships, worked part-time jobs, and educated myself about financial literacy. Notably, I took a night-school course called Young Entrepreneur Leadership Launchpad (YELL) and the McGill Personal Finance Essentials online course. Through these opportunities, I learned about credit scores, tax-free savings accounts, investing, and student loans. Most importantly, I learned that wise or unwise financial decisions today can have a huge impact later in life, such as when purchasing a home, which underscored the importance of being financially literate. After university, I hope to build a career in high school education, specifically in career and curriculum development, as I want more students to have opportunities to learn about how they can manage their financial future. In this day and age, amidst rising inflation and a fragile global order, I believe that enhancing financial literacy education is crucial, and can be key to our long-term, post-COVID economic recovery.
