Despite having a relatively small population compared to many other Canadian cities, Saskatoon is one of the most expensive places to live in the country. While things like rent and the cost of purchasing a house aren’t the highest, groceries and other daily necessities make the cost of living very high.
Sure, many can afford to live here with their salary alone, but others might need help. Borrowing money to cover costs of larger purchases or emergencies is common, but getting a good loan isn’t always easy. Instead, if you own your home and have some equity, you may want to consider getting a HELOC in Saskatoon Saskatchewan.
To learn how you can build home equity, check out this article.
A HELOC is a loan product that uses the amount of equity you have in your home. It is a revolving line of credit, which mean you can use as little or as much as you want, as opposed to a fixed amount. Also, you will only pay interest on the money you actually borrow, much like a traditional line of credit or a credit card. These loans are also relatively easy to get if you have a decent amount of equity in your home.
HELOCs are similar to a second mortgage in that they both use the equity in a person’s home as security or collateral for the loan. However, they are different in that you don’t get all of the money up front like a mortgage. While the interest rate on a HELOC is generally better than a standard line of credit, it will be higher than the interest rate you might get for a mortgage.
Of course, be sure that you know the risk before you decide to take out a HELOC in Saskatoon. If you miss any payments or default, you may lose your home, this makes a HELOC a slightly more risky borrowing option. But, on the other hand, the flexibility of a HELOC often makes it a more attractive option for many Canadian borrowers.

So now that you know the purpose of a HELOC and some of their characteristics, what are the common uses for a HELOC in Saskatoon and the rest of the country? These include:
Of course, a HELOC can be used for a wide range of other things, these are just among the most common. If you are confused about whether a certain expense makes sense for a HELOC, don’t hesitate to reach out to an expert in the space for assistance. However, you decide to use your HELOC, be sure it is something you truly need. This type of borrowing can put your home at risk, so tread lightly.
HELOC vs. a Home Equity Loan, everything you need to know here.
So while getting a HELOC in Saskatoon is often a good idea in many cases, it’s also not the right option for all consumers (for more information on this topic, click here). This is why it’s so important to have a general idea of what types of situations make sense when it comes to using your home to borrow.
For example, paying for a major home renovation is a common reason for people to take out a HELOC. On the other hand, buying a brand new car (when you have a perfectly good one) is not a good reason.
Simply put, if something adds value to your home, solves an immediate need, or helps you deal with a serious issue, a second mortgage can be worthwhile. However, if the money will just be spent on wants or other unnecessary items, it is best not to take out a second mortgage. Instead, you could find some other way to get the money you want.
